Description

Forrest M. Mims III is an electronics legend. My own electronics obsession started with his Engineer’s Mini-Notebooks, the hand-lettered booklets Radio Shack sold for a few dollars back when Radio Shack still had electronics parts on the shelves. Those books gave my 10-year-old self an introduction to electronics that led to a lifelong obsession. Reading Maverick Scientist, I finally got the story behind the man who started it all.

Maverick Scientist is Mims’ own life story, and it’s a fantastic read. He never finished a science degree, but he ended up publishing atmospheric research in real journals, building his own instruments to measure ozone and UV radiation, and getting recognized by NASA and the National Science Foundation for it. He’s also the person Scientific American offered its Amateur Scientist column to in 1990, then rescinded when the offer became national news because of his religious views. He tells that story here too, in his own words.

What makes the book worth reading is the amazing story of how a self-taught tinkerer with a soldering iron and a notebook built a career for himself as a highly respected scientist.

-Ian Dunn (author of Reference Circuits and founder of Bolt Industries)
