Description

The CD4060 is a handy counter in a 16 Pin DIP IC.. It has 14 stages and it’s input is sensitive enough to count ripples from a crystal oscillator. This chip is used in all Bolt Industries clocks with a 32.768Khz quatrz crystal oscillator to generate the square wave that keeps the time. If you divide 32768 by two 14 times, you’re left with a nice even 2Hz. Send this 2Hz square wave over to a CD4027 Dual JK flip flop and you get a really clean, precise 1Hz square wave that can be used to keep time really accurately. Watch out for static electricity when handling these chips. Their oscilator inputs are VERY sensitive and it doesn’t take much of a zap to destroy them.
